PowerPro Sport 250

The first thing that struck us about the PowerPro Sport 250 was the build quality. For under £200 the Sport 250 is well finished, sturdy and has a real quality ‘look and feel’ to it.

Unfolding the trolley was simplicity itself – two sliding locks and the trolley was up and ready for the bag. We were also impressed with way the locks clicked back into place, a really neat touch adding to the feeling of solidity and good engineering.

The battery sits neatly on the battery tray and is secured by a strap. The connectors are the standard red/black type so are easy to connect together. The bag is held on by two adjustable straps, top and bottom. At first these were a bit fiddly to adjust for our Taylor Made Tour bag, but once adjusted they were simple to snap on and off

Turning the single speed control switched on the trolley. There is a clear multi-coloured battery indicator light on the handle to show the battery state and the speed knob is within easy finger reach. The handle itself is ‘L’ shaped and has a comfortable feel, although it is probably more suitable for right-handed golfers.

Controlling the speed is simplicity itself – simply turn the speed control!  PowerPro state that the trolley has a ‘soft start’ to prevent wheel spin and reduce motor torque. It did take half a second or so to ‘kick in’ but it is something we got used to very quickly and the acceleration is smooth and quite rapid, reaching full walking pace in a few strides.

On the course, the Sport 250 is excellent. It is quiet and has that feeling of power that gives you confidence for the hills. We had no problem with steep gradients even with a full Tour bag and full set of clubs on board. The trolley was light and easy to manoeuvre and ran straight when you let go of the handle.

Overall, we were very impressed with the performance. When you add in the 2 year Warranty and the free accessories – trolley bag and scorecard holder - this trolley, for its price, is amazing value. We feel it would hold its own against any of the major brands. Whilst it is a simple machine with no fancy ‘gizmos’, for the average golfer who wants performance, reliability and value we firmly believe that the Sport 250 is in a class of its own. We have no hesitation in giving the PowerPro Sport 250 a full ‘5 Stars’.

PowerPro Sport 250

The Sport 250 is described by PowerPro as their ‘entry level’ trolley. We are always suspicious of cheaper-end trolleys but the Sport 250 proved to be a real exception.

It is based on the Powakaddy type frame and uses the same type of locking mechanism, so it is easy to fold and unfold. When folded it is compact enough to fit in the boot of any small car and at 7.5kg is light and easy to handle, especially for ladies.

In use, the Sport 250 was easy to manoeuvre and tackled the hills on our course without a problem. The motor was quiet and the top speed left you running after the trolley! It has one simple rotary speed control and there is also a battery indicator light to show the battery charge.

The most amazing feature of the Sport 250 is its 2 year Warranty (and a 5 year Warranty on the motor and gearbox) which for its price is unusual. Having said that, the trolley appears to be well built and should prove to be very reliable but the extra long warranty does give you confidence in the manufacturer’s claims, not to mention the peace of mind.

The Sport 250 comes complete with a scorecard holder and a zipped bag for the trolley which keeps mud and dirt out of the car boot.

All in all, the Sport 250 is a sturdy and well made trolley that performs well. The additional benefit of the long warranty and free accessories, all for under £200, make it a great buy.

PowerPro 350 Digital

We ‘road tested’ the new PowerPro 350 Digital last month at Oundle Golf Club.

The 350 Digital is the latest trolley from PowerPro and this model comes hot on the heels of Motocaddy and Powakaddy by having a full LCD digital screen and controls.

Our first impressions were favourable. Whilst not the most stylish trolley we have ever seen, the quality of the trolley was good, with a solid frame and some neat design features.

The LCD screen is housed in the D shaped handle, but it is at a convenient angle to reduce glare and the large numbers are easy to read against the back-lit screen.

The trolley is very easy to fold and unfold and weighs only 8kg. There are 3 main controls: a central knob for setting the speed and two side buttons for altering the ‘Mode’ and changing from yards to metres.

To start the trolley, you simply connect the 28ah battery supplied and hold down the centre knob. This starts the trolley in ‘Competition Mode’ where there is no read-out of distance or actual speed. Pressing the right hand button puts the trolley into its normal ‘speed mode’. You rotate the centre knob to set the speed and then press it and away it goes! Speed is adjusted by rotating the knob and the actual speed is indicated clearly on the large screen in either mph or kph. To stop the trolley, you press the centre knob. To start, press it again and the trolley takes off at the speed you last set – impressive! The 350 Digital also has a sensor on the gearbox/axle which constantly monitors the speed. If you start going uphill, the trolley will automatically adjust to maintain the set speed, just like Cruise Control on your car – very impressive!

The next mode is ‘Measurement’. This cleverly allows you to measure how far you have hit your drive and/or the distance to the green by ‘zeroing’ the display at the yardage marker and deducting the distance travelled. In use, we found this to be very accurate and matched our GPS.

The next press of the right button puts you into ‘Distance’ mode. Here you set the distance you want the trolley to travel (from 1 to 999yards!), point the trolley in the right direction and press the centre knob. The trolley sets off on its own and then stops when the distance is covered. We used this feature a lot to send the trolley off to the next tee whilst we putted out – a really neat feature. The 350 Digital is fitted with a detachable rear stabilizer wheel which prevents the trolley falling backwards when going up steep slopes and gives you the confidence to send the trolley anywhere.

Finally there is a ’Counter’ mode. The manufacturer claims that this may be useful to keep a tally of fairways hit or the number of putts, but in practice we don’t think it will be used too often, unless you forget your scorecard!

The top speed and hill-climbing ability was excellent and the trolley, with its powerful 200watt motor was more than enough for our needs, carrying a full bag and a full set of clubs effortlessly around Oundle, which has some steep climbs.

The trolley is covered by a comprehensive 2 year Warranty and this is extended to 5 years on the motor and gearbox. At nearly £150 cheaper than other equivalent trolleys, the 350 Digital is excellent value. It is sturdy and well built and performed faultlessly on our road-test. We have no hesitation in recommending the 350 Digital.

The PowerPro 350 Digital is available from PowerPro Golf and is priced at £269.99.

PowerPro/Trojan Sport 250

TG rating *****

What’s the score?
The Trojan 250 Sport comes from PowerPro Golf, and at under £200 for a 27- hole battery this is a solid package for the money. PowerPro say it’s "designed with a strong emphasis on quality components and reliability, backed by a long warranty”. This is two years for parts and labour which is highly impressive at this price point.

What do we think?
Hmm, as the company hints themselves, this is very much not state-of-the-art but for the price point it’s competing with what we think this is a pretty sound trolley. It is a bit ‘old-school’ – the trolley is controlled by a single on/off switch with variable speed control and there is nothing Fancy Dan about it. In terms of features, there is very little to write about; but as the recession takes hold, trolleys like this should become more and more popular. And, the two-year warranty makes it incredible value for money. Like many of the others on test it fitted comfortably into the boot of a Ford Focus.
