Maintaining a Golf Battery
An electric golf trolley requires a battery that is designed to store a lot of energy, which can be drained and then recharged over and over again. This type of golf battery is referred to as a ‘deep cycle golf battery’. It is very important that this golf battery is charged with the correct type of charger, and not, for example with a car charger, which will only shorten the life of your battery considerably.
The life of a golf battery will depend on how well it is treated. Here are a few tips on maintaining a golf battery: -
• A new golf battery may not be fully charged, so it is advise to give it a top up charge for a few hours before using it on a golf trolley for the first time.
• Only use the correct charger, which is specifically designed for deep cycle GEL/AGM batteries. It must state that it is a two or three stage charger.
• Do not leave your golf battery in a discharged state for long periods. It is highly recommended that a golf battery be charged immediately after use.
• During the winter months when electric golf trolleys are disallowed on the golf course, your golf battery will keep its charge for up to three months but remember to give it a full charge every 4-8 weeks to maintain an optimum charge level, then charge your battery just before you play again.
• Do not store a golf battery in ‘extreme’ temperature conditions.
• Periodically check that your golf trolley battery is in good working condition and that the battery terminals are fully tightened and clean.
• Re-charge time on a golf trolley battery is approximately 6 to 10 hours. Don’t leave your battery 'on charge' for days. This will dry out the battery, shorten its life and shorten the life of your charger.
A golf battery is the primary source of power for an electric golf trolley. It requires proper maintenance and proper charging methods for a long lasting performance, in turn helping the golf trolley to perform at its best.
